ACC Public Reporting

Through its suite of NCDR clinical data registries and quality improvement programs, the ACC is helping institutions bridge gaps between science and practice and improve the quality of cardiovascular care they deliver. This year, the College is taking quality improvement to the next level by implementing an expanded voluntary hospital public reporting effort based on registry data, as decided by the ACC Board of Trustees. The ACC has collaborated with Heart Rhythm Society and The Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions on this public reporting effort.

Hospital Profiles

For the first time, all hospitals participating in NCDR have a Hospital Profile established on CardioSmart.org, ACC’s patient-facing website dedicated to enhancing the patient-provider relationship. Through these profiles, patients, caregivers and other stakeholders are able to search hospitals based on specific criteria (location, hospital name, services provided, etc.) and learn about every participating hospital’s quality measurement efforts through the NCDR.
Follow these steps to find your hospital’s profile page:

  1. Go to CardioSmart.org/FindYourHeartaHome
  2. Search for your hospital name
  3. Click on "Go to profile page" under your hospital name

Hospital Profile pages exactly reflect the information that Registry Site Managers input into their NCDR Site Profile. When a Registry Site Manager updates information in the NCDR Site Profile, the update will be reflected on CardioSmart.org within 24 hours.

Voluntary Hospital Public Reporting

Hospitals participating in the CathPCI Registry and/or ICD Registry now have the option to take part in ACC's public reporting effort. Eligible hospitals who voluntarily agree to report their data from these registries will have the opportunity to publicly demonstrate their commitment to quality improvement. The following National Quality Forum-endorsed measures have been identified for the first phase of public reporting:

ICD Registry

  • Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitor/Angiotensin Receptor Blocker (ACE/ARB) Therapy at Discharge for ICD Implant Patients With Left Ventricular Systolic Dysfunction (LVSD)
  • Beta Blocker at Discharge for ICD Implant Patients With a Previous Myocardial Infarction
  • Beta Blocker at Discharge for ICD Implant Patients With LVSD
  • Composite: Discharge Medications (ACE/ARB and beta blockers) in Eligible ICD Implant Patients

CathPCI Registry

  • Proportion of Patients With Aspirin Prescribed at Discharge
  • Proportion of Patients With a P2Y12 Inhibitor Prescribed at Discharge (Patients With Stents)
  • Proportion of Patients With a Statin Prescribed at Discharge
  • Composite: Discharge Medications (Aspirin, P2Y 12 inhibitor, and Statin) in Eligible PCI Patients

You can now access your hospital's report through your Public Reporting Dashboard (available under "Other Reports" in your dashboard when you are logged in to NCDR as a CathPCI Registry or ICD Registry participant). If you need help obtaining access to your preview report, contact your hospital's Registry Site Manager.

In late October or early November 2015, measure ratings for hospitals that have opted-in to publicly report will be released to the public. The data will be presented using a four-star rating system that is based on accepted clinical thresholds. If your hospital chooses not to publicly report, you will be listed as "not participating" with ACC public reporting. The publicly reported information will be available via CardioSmart's Find Your Heart a Home tool, designed to connect cardiac patients and caregivers with the right hospital. This tool will give patients and caregivers access to demographics and publicly reported data, important information that can help them understand the quality of care being provided in their area and make informed choices.

Public reporting is a strategic objective of the College. The ACC also has developed a health policy statement addressing the growing role of public reporting in health care.

How to Participate in Voluntary Hospital Public Reporting

The public reporting opt-in period is open. Hospitals that plan to publicly report their data for the above measures should submit a separate Data Release Consent Form for each registry they plan to report on. Further details about the consenting process and overall program content are contained in the program requirements document.

Improve Your Data Quality

A Data Quality Checklist is now available to help your hospital ensure that all steps in your data management process produce complete, accurate, reliable, and valid data. This tool is part of a new Public Reporting Toolkit designed to help NCDR hospitals improve on overall quality and performance for all registries, as well as publicly reported ICD Registry and CathPCI Registry metrics.
